Legacy Russel’s manifesto, „Glitch Feminism“, is a call for digital strategies in the self-creation of gender and racial identity, that is, „glitches“ in the socio-technical fabric we inhabit. In the so-called „Age of AI“, it becomes relevant to interrogate how AI perceives us and our multifaceted identities, including class, profession and aspirations. In this talk, I will discuss critical contributions to AI research which show how the main functionality of AI is to „divide and conquer“. Then, I will discuss collective and individual strategies to „glitch AI“, that is, seek to break it or invert its functioning so that it benefits communities. My objective with this talk is to provide avenues for AI enthusiasts to critically engage their assumptions, and for AI skeptics to find their people and strategies.

Mattia Cerrato is a computer scientist. He is a Lecturer (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) at the Institut für Informatik at JGU Mainz. He has been teaching a Responsible AI lecture for five years, but this is the first time he has been invited to discuss the topic at JGU. His academic research deals with discrimination, transparency and privacy in AI and has been published in both interdisciplinary conferences (FAccT, AIES) and technical venues (ICML, MLJ, AAAI). He sits on the board of directors of the European Association for Algorithmic Fairness.
